Speculations on Kurt’s Future Boyfriend: The Sam vs. Blair Controversy

Kurt HummelOne of the extremely hot topics among Gleeks right now is the debate over who will be Kurt Hummel’s future boyfriend. I think we can all agree that after all he’s been through, he deserves to find love. The real question is who will it be with. In this post I’m going to both summarize and theorize on who I think it will be, and I hope that you will do the same in the comments section below, because that’s what it’s there for. We want to know what you guys think, too!

First of all, the idea of Kurt getting a boyfriend originated way back in January when the online casting call concept was still green-lit. Ryan Murphy was quoted by Ausiello as saying, “We’re going to make them a power couple. We’re not going to do the whole hiding in the shadows thing. We’re going to make them popular, and out and proud and glamorous. Like prom king and king. We’re doing the opposite of what’s been done.” Later that month, Ausiello cryptically revealed that the character would also be on the football team. The most convincing bit of evidence that Sam was, at least at one point, planned to be Kurt’s boyfriend is this: long before Chord Overstreet had been cast, Chris Colfer revealed to a fan that the name of Kurt’s boyfriend would be Sam. (Sorry you got in trouble, Chris!)

Chord OverstreetThe turning point where the cast became so tight-lipped about the subject (with a little coaching, I’m sure) was when the character Sam was officially announced through a press release from Fox stating that he would be played by Chord Overstreet. When briefly describing him, it said nothing of him potentially being a love interest for anyone, which we should have taken as the first sign. Almost instantly, the cast began to pull those famous “I don’t know!/They don’t tell us anything!/We don’t know until we get the scripts!” lines. You may have noticed that when Chris was asked about the boyfriend character having been casted yet at Glee‘s Academy Event, he stumbled thorough his response: “I don’t know if the person– I don’t know how to answer this question safely.” He then looked to the producers and instantly switched to a “No… I don’t know anything” response. It’s obvious that he was under the impression that Chord would be the boyfriend, but wasn’t exactly sure what he was allowed to say. (Poor Chris!) Could that much have really changed since July? This wouldn’t be the first time that Ryan Murphy has tried to keep us on our toes [read: lied to us] so that a future plotline wouldn’t be prematurely revealed.

The most recent bean-spilling was done by Jane Lynch, who obviously missed the ‘mum’s the word’ briefings. When E!’s Mark Malkin asked about the character, she replied “”They’ve cast him already… He becomes the new star quarterback and he’s going to be Kurt’s boyfriend.” Jane went on to describe him as “a good-looking kid… He’s tall, boyish, with straight blond hair and big fat, pouty lips.” Big fat, pouty lips? Yeah, she was definitely referring to Sam “Big Mouth” Evans, no doubt about it. In a TV Guide interview with Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer at the Emmys, Jane admits she later was told, “Don’t spill the beans on that!” to which she added, “Also, there may be no beans to spill.” However it could very well be possible that she just wasn’t up to date. The evidence is overwhelming that Sam was originally meant to be Kurt’s boyfriend, but now even I’m beginning to think it’s possible that they’ve changed the plan.

Now comes the real game changer: Blair. Who is that, you may be asking…? As revealed by TV Guide’s William Keck, the producers are now looking to cast a new character for the show’s 6th episode. Time wise, that means they would need to have started (if not completed) the casting hunt by now. The character, Blair, is described as “a gay high school junior” who is “masculine, sexy, charismatic and handsome…” He will become a recurring character who gets the opportunity to sing in multiple episodes, and here’s the kicker, is in a rival glee club. Very recently, an audition video surfaced online that is supposedly for the character Blair. [Edit: It has been announced that the name of the 6th episode is "Never Been Kissed," which is titled after a film sharing a very similar plot line to the 6th episode. This further confirms that this audition footage is legitimate.] The video features a relatively unknown actor by the name of Brian Hissong reading for the role of Blair. Remember that just because he’s reading it in the audition video does not mean that he has been cast. If they want to get the casting just right, the producers and casting agents would go through numerous audition videos before making a decision, and this may or may not have been the person they went/are going with.

NOTE: Do NOT watch this video if you do not want to be spoiled. It features very plot intensive lines that may or may not appear in the final script of the 6th episode.

The video was originally on YouTube before being “removed by the user,” however, it has been reuploaded on Chinese YouTube equivalent, YouKu. I went ahead and embedded it, but here’s no telling how long it will be before this one gets pulled as well.

From the video, we can deduce that Kurt goes undercover as “Billy” and infiltrates the opposing school’s glee club. Incognito, Kurt befriends Blair and his friends before eventually being discovered. But when Kurt believes that they are actually going to beat him up for spying, they reveal that they figured it out a while ago and found how bad a spy he was to be kind of “endearing.” It is then revealed that at Blair’s school, they do not bully people for being gay — a stark contrast to Kurt’s experiences in the halls of McKinley. When Blair explains that he is gay, Kurt talks about how hard it is being the only openly gay kid back at his own school. Then the whole thing gets a little too “after school special” for my taste with a serious little speech from Blair.

There’s a part of me that is praying that “Blair” is an extremely clever ploy to throw people off. People have been theorizing that Blair will be a couple episode character arc, while something with Sam could develop much later on. Back at Comic-Con 2010, Chris told Ausiello that he “heard they might be leaning towards another storyline more, which would delay that.” He then added that the new delay might be “provocative.” Could this speed bump along the way to love be a short-lived story arc with Blair? I’m hoping so. [Edit: It has been said that Quinn will somehow play a part in Kurt's future relationship, and the best theory is that Sam will be with her before an eventual relationship with Kurt.] For these reasons, Sam/Kurt fans shouldn’t lose hope just yet.

As of now, it appears that neither character fully describes the original plan for Kurt’s boyfriend. While Sam is on the football team, an early spoiler that may have since been trashed, he certainly doesn’t fit Ryan Murphy’s “out and proud” description. Murphy may have decided that Sam wasn’t the right character to be Kurt’s boyfriend, thus creating Blair. It wouldn’t be the first time that the producers have changed their minds about a character. (Did anyone else notice that the New Directions “family” took Matt Rutherford’s transfer surprisingly well?) At this point, it looks like Sam as originally described doesn’t exist. I think Chord Overstreet is doing a great job with Sam right now, so I’m still praying that he turns out to be the one. (It looks like I’m not alone on that. Yay, Kistin!)

In “Audition,” they addressed how as the new guy, Sam isn’t comfortable with being too different just yet, therefore deciding against joining New Directions (for now). Maybe this insecurity about being different goes a lot deeper than we see in the Season 2 premiere; or maybe not. It’s anyone’s guess at this point, so what’s yours?

  1. I think Sam’s a little too into Quinn to be into Kurt.

  2. I see I am not the only one who thinks Ryan Murphy has dropped the ball when it comes to Kurt and Sam being boyfriends. It’s rather obvious that Sam was originally meant to be Kurt’s boyfriend. And now he’s with Quinn? Please get this storyline back on track a.s.a.p.! It’s insulting to get all of us Kurt fans excited over this storyline then pull the plug on it.

  3. After “Never Been Kissed” I know whose going to be Kurt’s boyfriend. The football player that kissed Kurt. Number one he’s obviously confused about his sexuality, Quinn was a cheerleader, she obviously has some sort of relationship with him. Really guys, it’s obvious. Maybe Sam is bicurious, or even gay and we all hoped he would be Kurts BF but chances are slim to none with all the bean spilling that went on. Maybe, just maybe the producers will keep Kurt and football player together for a while, to get us all thinking theyre together 4 ever then Sam steals Kurt away. And Blaine seems to just want to be Kurt’s friend. Maybe Blaine helps Kurt help the football player. Right?

  4. Kurt’s boyfriend will be from the football team… and with the first guy to have kissed him. The “hamhock” football player Dave Karofsky who right now can’t admit he’s gay, but has a crush on Kurt. That is the reason for the harrassment!

  5. PLEASEE if someone can tellme the name or where i can find the yellow boots that kurt has on episode 6 !!!! PLEASEEEEE i just loved them!!

  6. So if you can back it up. That will really help us all. And this might bring some good repute to you.

  7. I think that Kurt& Blaine might be involved in a relationship ( Mercedes was confused in ep 7 thinking that they were involved in a relationship:))but before nationals; Blaine breaks kurt’s heart and Sam defends him and becomes his BF.
I believe that because of the Finn/Rachel/Jesse situation is Season 1 might happen again this season with Kurt,Blaine and Sam.

Another thing could be that Dave Karofsky would need advice from both Kurt&Blaine, he goes out with Kurt only but, at the near end, Dave dumps Kurt!

Yet another is that since Finn was Kurt’s 1st crush, (it didn’t end well) Sam’s his 2nd and 2nd time’s the charm, right?

  8. At this point, I highly doubt that Sam will get involved with Kurt. I mean, he seems pretty determined to be with Quin, now that he’s given her a PROMISE RING *sarcastic oohs and aahs*

Kurt’s gonna be with Blaine. HE HAS TO! he JUST has to!!! Unless he gets with Karofsky, which I highly doubt. but there still is at least a 18% chance that they will get together. I dont know, I just dont know what to believe anymore.
one things for sure though: Kurt and Sam will NOT end up being a couple. If it supposed to become the next power couple, than it doesnt seem like the apparently once-straight ex-quarterback who courted the head cheerleader would not be ashamed of persuing the only other outed gay kid at the school who is also slightly more enfeminine.

that storyline does not seem very likely to come to pass, no matter how unpredictable Murphy is.
…….maybe a NEW CHARACTER will be introduced after the winter break!!! THAT SEEMS MUCH MORE LIKELY! seriously…

  9. I think you mean “Blaine.”

  10. Annnnnnd….months later….we’ve all been converted into hardcore Klaine shippers. Who can resist Darren Criss?

  11. NO! MY SAMMY IS NOT KURT’S FUTURE BOYFRIEND! NO! NO! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLAINE IS KURT’ NEW BOYFRIEND!!!!!!!!!!! NOT MY SAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NO!!!!!!!!! BLAINIE, BLAINIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NO!!!!!!!!!! SAM IS NOT KURT’S BOYFRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. I will stop watching glee forever if you put sam and kurt as a couple! And so will ALL of my friends and twitter followers and there are alot! Please don’t, I love sam!I don’t want my Sammy to be a homo! Please, please, please don’t!

  13. Two the last two people.
What does it matter it’s I doubt that they are going to have Kurt cheat on Blaine. If your a true fan Kurt is one of the last People that will ever even think about cheating. People need to learn how ton put two and two together and use more then just the imaginative part of their brain. ALSO I don’t know why girl think that some got tv star will ever meet you and remember your name. It’s not gonna happen k? It’s really pathetic how people are obsessed with stars. Haha

  14. Its totally possible I guess, for anything to happen, given the right situations, chord overstreets recent interview he says that something will in fact definately brew with he and kurt, but he could not give any details because he would not know until the next episode is presented to them, its not like kurt to cheat but we dont know how faithful blaine is, he could screw kurt over now that kurt transferred back, sam could blow the doors off of the closet when he finds out about quinn and finn, professing his hatred for women and end up with kurt in the process, or…now that karofsky is coming to terms better with himself, could be a possible suitor for kurt, as well, but they wouldnt make a glamorous couple as much as he and sam, so who knows at this point

  15. Annnd months later with all the cards dealt it’s SamCedes and Klaine.

Dunno about you guys, but I’m loving the way this turned out.

Also, creepy people who think Chord is thier boyfriend? Calm down.

  16. Thanks for the great blog. It was very helpful for me. Preserve sharing such concepts in the future as well. This was actually what I was in search of, and I’m glad to came right here! Thanks for sharing the such info with us

  17. Still bummed about this. I really wanted Sam and Kurt to end up together.
Kurt and Blaine just really don’t have any chemistry and the way their storyline was written was kind of insulting. Kurt’s my favorite character, I didn’t want him having a crush on another boy for several months with no signs of reciprocation and then all of a sudden Blaine likes him back and he jumps at the chance like a lovestruck puppy. Not only that but I really wanted Kurt’s boyfriend to be a fleshed out character and part of New Directions. Not only does Blaine not go to McKinley, but he literally only has interactions with Kurt. He’s not a real character. Makes me sad because I had such high hopes for Kurt’s boyfriend storyline.
It was all very forced and I just do not like their dynamic.
And what they did to Sam was even more unjustifiable. It seemed like they just coupled him up with Mercedes because she was the only single girl in the group. It was insulting to literally just make a couple out of thin air when they had less than 3 minutes of interaction together. Mercedes does not seem like the type who would sit down and watch Avatar with Sam. They are even worse than Kurt and Blaine and I thought that was impossible. It’s insulting to Sam and Mercedes fans.

Sam and Kurt are perfect for each other just for the simple fact that the character of Sam was literally created to be Kurt’s boyfriend as this article has shed light onto. Sam and Kurt are both hopeless romantics who just want to be accepted by their partners, I think they’d be such a cute couple because even though they have different interests they have the same ideals.
Blaine was just supposed to be on for three episodes and be Kurt’s mentor. It’s kind of sad that the popularity of the actor and uproar of fans made the writers of this show change a plot with such good potential and ground breaking message just to please a few 12 year old girls who think Darren Criss is cute.

Season two made me lose a lot of respect and faith I had for the writers of the show. But hey, they’ve made characters that I’ve grown really attached to enough to get this much of an emotional rise out of me so I guess they must be doing some things right.

  18. No way! Sam and Quinn are meant for each other! Kurt dont go that way..
