Kings of Leon Shuts Door on Glee
For those of you were dying to see Artie perform a heart-wrenching rendition of Use Somebody…this most recent news will shut you down.
While Glee has made use of dozens of hit artists’ music (Madonna, Lady Gaga, Neil Diamond, and The Rolling Stones to name a few), and with many other artists begging for their music to be covered (cough Paul McCartney) their most recent musical attempt has been unceremoniously denied.
Kings of Leon, when approached by Glee producers with hopes of using their music, slammed the door in their faces.
“We could have sold out so much more. We turn stuff down constantly,” says the band’s bassist, Jared Followill. The band says they’ve never watched Glee. “Although apparently everyone loves it,” remarks frontman Caleb Followill, ever so knowlegable.
They’re not lying about the turning down. Apparently, the band also shut down another hit comedy with thousands of adoring fans: “We got an offer to appear on an episode of Ugly Betty. They wanted us to play ourselves.” But they said no.
The band went on to further confirm the selectivity of their musical privileges: “We had some people call us up wanting to know if we’d allow Use Somebody to appear in the trailer for their next movie, and we turned them down,” Caleb Followill tells NME magazine. “Next day, they called back and tried to put us through to the star of the movie—I won’t name names, but he’s an incredibly famous actor—to let him try and convince us to agree to do it. I was like, ‘Man, don’t even waste your energy’.”
In a bizzare twist of events, Gossip Girl was deemed worthy of the band’s hit music. An episode in 2008 featured three songs from their album Only By the Night: Closer, Sex on Fire, and Use Somebody.
What do you think? Were you dying to hear these corporate rock gods? Or are you content with the already diverse supply of classics already available for cover? Like, say, Queen?

If their gonna make it that big of a deal I say no way. What btiches.
I know jeez, what a bunch of jerks. Oh well, didn’t really care for their music anyways.
Personally, I think it’s OK for someone to refuse to let any show or movie use their songs. Not everyone is a fan of Glee, or that other movie, so if they think it’s not a fit or choose not to, so be it. I’d rather hear that than hear them brag something like, “I’ve never seen Glee, I hate it so much, and have absolutely no faith in the show, but I like money and let them use my songs so now I’m rolling in dough.” I like it more when the musicians are fans, like Madonna, and want to contribute. What personally irks me is the amount of worthless Glee merchandise (Glee bedding???) that’s coming out. I think that should bother fans since a lot of this stuff is just going to end up on the clearance rack in a few months.
They don’t have to be such jerks about how many offers they get. Forget them.
Though I guess the whole band gathers around the couch to watch Gossip Girls weekly -_-
It’s their music and they have every right to say no. I’m a big Kings of Leon fan and find it unfortunate. I think if their music was featured on Glee it’ll bring about a larger audience that can appreciate their music. Why are musicians so afraid of “selling out”?
Glee is a unique show that has reintroduced young fans to Barbra Streisand, broadway musicals, and other aspects of music. What other show has done that?
i think their attitude is crap the only good song they have is use sombody and if kevin/artie covered it it would make it better they aren’t that good to be worrying about selling out so they need to get over them selves
Funny isnt it how they use the words sell out but they got no problems when there music is used and sung on American Idol and the Xfactor.
there loss i mean glee is amazing and i bet u anything that they r just scared that glee is gonna do it better than they ever would but they dont have to diss glee saying we never watch the show but they have some sort of wierd love of gossip girl glee is better and could get them double the amount of fans gossip girl ever could so like i said its there loss
Whatever, I’d say both parties are doing fine without the other. There’s tons of songs out there, I’m sure something else will work well.
They will regret it. Besides, more people would listen/buy their music if it was featured on one of the most popular television shows on tv (Glee).
hey. i say that featuring more queen music would be amazing, and possibly get a miss kerry ellis over to film some stuff. <3
I like Kings of Leon and it is unfortunate that they turned down Glee. Yet it’s okay for a country singer to remake their song and sell their shirts at Wal Mart? Yeah, sorry guys, you already sold out. What are they trying to say? That Journey sold out? Madonna? Queen? Whatever.
I just don’t want a bunch of tribute episode, gotta admit, glee is capitalizing wherever they can… merchandise etc, and it’s kinda annoying, and loosing their realness..
I don’t actually care for Kings of Leon..exactly who are they? I mean I think someone showed me a song by them and I remarked. Who are these people this guy sings terrible.
Yeah, it’s their business if they don’t want their songs all over the place, but denying producers just for the sake of denying them seems kind of silly. Especially after allowing their use on Gossip Girl.
guess this group doesn’t want 2 become famous
I think it’s perfectly fine for them to refuse. I am actually thrilled that Kings of Leon don’t wanna sell out and be a huge main stream band. They don’t want to be like all the other bands out there who will do anything to promote themselves. I fucking love this band, and their music is killer!
stupid. cut to them eventually selling out. as if they’re SO incredibly huge and important to the music industry. no one even cared about them from their OWN country till recently! talk about a stupid decision.
(and why did this comment thing just say that my comment seems too “spammy”?? wtf?!)
And this is why KOL will remain one hit wonders

^ Eh…they have ONE hit and like the above said, it will remain that way. They have to be worth something to “sell out”. Plus, you praise them how they won’t do anything to promote themselves? They are the 3rd band to say no to Glee, and one of them changed their minds already. Sounds like a stunt to me.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH You Suck
