Hannah Colfer’s Story

Posted by Rob on Mar-30-2010 under Chris Colfer, Interviews, News, Videos

Hannah Colfer I’m sure you all know who Chris Colfer is and you’ve heard his fantastic story about how he got the role of Kurt Hummel on Glee. However, there’s another member of the Colfer family whose story is even more inspirational. Meet Hannah Colfer, Chris Colfer’s little sister. Hannah suffers from severe epilepsy and has approximately 50 seizures an hour. While her condition is quite tragic, her family works very hard to the the best of the situation.

Below is a radio interview that Karyn Colfer, Chris and Hannah’s mom, did with KYNO Radio in Fresno, CA. Karyn talks about her daughter’s condition and all that they have had to go through as a family. She says that now that Chris is out of the house and she has a little more time on her hands, she has affiliated herself with an organization that is dedicated to finding a cure for epilepsy, CURE – Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy. Please watch the inspirational video below, but be warned that some of the images of the side effects from Hannah’s epilepsy medication are a bit graphic.

The CUREIf you would like to know more about CURE, you can visit their website. Also, I’m sure everyone would appreciate it if you took the time to make a donation, no matter how small. If you would like, you can even make it in Hannah Colfer’s name by checking “Yes, this is an honor or memorial gift.” on the donation page.

Lastly, if you’re going to Tweet about this, please include the hashtags #WeLoveHannahColfer and #SupportCURE in order to help raise awareness.

Thank you very much! Hannah is truly an inspiration and I’m sure Karyn Colfer is very proud of both of her amazing children. :)

  1. The entire Colfer family is so inspirational. I cannot begin to imagine how strong they must be to deal with Hannah’s unfortunate situation. And she and Chris look so much alike! I have so much respect for them all.

  2. My computer doesn’t let me watch the video, but I’m curious, Have you tried the Atkins Diet? My son is in “continuous Seizure” and I think it helps. He’s on 4 different neural depressants and that & the diet keep him fairly functional… :-P
    (And barely twitching…)
They say it acts to trick the body into thinking it is in a state of fasting, which has been found effective for hundreds of years (before all the meds we have access to now.)
Bottom line is: lotsa protein next-to-no carbs.
    Good luck!

  6. Chris and Hannah have both permanently touched me in so many ways. They are walking inspirations, that should teach us all some valuble lessons.

    Chris’s Lessons:
    1. Never underestimate yourself.
    2. Chase after your wildest dreams.
    3. Be yourself, and be proud of who you are.
    4. You can occasionally strut your @$$ off in a Single Ladies number!!!

    Hannah’s Lessons:
    1. When in doubt, always look on the bright side of things!
    2. Live life to the fullest, any day could be “the day.”
    3. Be courageous–find the Cowardly Lion inside you (the brave part!)
    4. Never give up.

You two are my idols, and be proud of that. Chris and Hannah, if you are reading this, please know I love and support every move you make, whether it’s good or bad, gleeful or sad. :) :) <33

  16. Oh my gosh… I go to school with Hannah, and I knew she had epilepsy, but I never knew it was so bad… I feel so bad for her. It’s amazing that their family can stay so strong, and that there’s so much pure love there… I’m going to have to ask my mother to donate to this cause.

  17. Hi my name is helen walker and i live in doncaster
i am 26 years old. I also suffer from epilepsy but it’s nearly controlled. I have 1 a day which is good

  18. My name is Jen Kantrowitz. I have had Epilepsy since I was 14 years old. It’s been 5 years since I was diagnosed. I only have seizures about once a year, sometimes as many as 4 times a year. Most of them are nocturnal, meaning I am asleep when I have them and wake up with headaches. I have no idea when I will have them. I have been taking medication since to control it since I was 14. I went nearly 2 years, from the time I was 14, seizure free. However, just after my 16th birthday, the seizures came back and have been a near yearly event since then. I haven’t been able to be a normal teenager doing things such as getting my driver’s permit and then license, or hang out with my friends without the fear of seizing scaring me.

I know that many people say that they understand, but the reality is that they really don’t know what that fear is really like.

I’ve taken a page from Hannah’s book and I am living every day to the fullest, not taking anything for granted. This girl and her brother have really inspired me to do what I love best, be myself, and chase my dreams. Right now, I am chasing my dream to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences and I’ll follow my heart from there.

Chris and Hannah Colfer, you inspire so many people. I don’t think you even realize how much you both inspire people.

  19. Ive had numerous EEGs and i wasnt doped up at all dont know what kind of Drs would dope up a kid and deprive her of sleep when there was no need at all

  20. The thing that Karyn talks are so true.. People should talk more about Epilepsy. I was diagnosed when I was 4 years old so I have suffered from it 14 years and it affects so much in my life. I have petit mal but it’s not that bad. People don’t see from outside that i’m having a seizure but my brains are having power cut’s all the time. they said that my epilepsy will be over when I am in puberty but it wasn’t. I try to talk about it with my friends and tell them so I appreciate the whole Colfer family because they talk about it and they want that people know and that doctors find the cure.
ps. When I was little they used to deprivate me to sleep but not anymore because I can lay still in the examine bed.

  21. The ketogenic diet may be Hannah’s saving grace. The movie “First Do No Harm” illustrates one mother’s dedication to saving her severely eplileptic son’s life. Please look into this for Hannah. It has saved so many and many have no more seizures
