GleeFan Exclusive: Kevin McHale Q&A on filming Glee, traveling & more!

Posted by Rob on Sep-20-2011 under GleeFan.com Exclusives, Interviews, Kevin McHale

Kevin McHaleKevin McHale, also known as Glee‘s Artie Abrams, has answered your questions in his exclusive Q&A with GleeFan.com! He talks about what it was like filming Glee in NYC, his traveling experiences, if a solo album is in his future, and the most amusing thing he’s found while trolling the Tumblrverse. Enjoy!
———

Q: “What was your favorite part of shooting in NYC?” – Ellen H. (18, New York)
A: Seeing so many of the fans come to out to watch us. It was really insane and I didn’t expect it at all. Our trailers were on the side of the street, so you can’t really block people off, so it was intense to walk out of your door and have tons of people right there!

Q: “How did you feel about coming to Melbourne in July this year?” – Natasha S. (18, Melbourne, Australia)
A: I absolutely love Melbourne! It’s definitely one of my favorite cities I’ve ever been to. The food is amazing and (not to sound too superficial) but it has the most beautiful people, haha.

Q: “Would you ever consider doing a solo album sometime in the future?” – Fatima M. (16, Dubai)
A: I think if I had the right songs that I was really proud of and naturally felt like the right time, I don’t see why not. It’s all about the songs though. I want to do something I’m happy with, and I’m super critical so it’s a challenge.

Q: “What has been the best advice ever given to you?” – Kat V. (14, Manila, Philippines)
A: It’s not real advice as much as it is a saying from my sister, and I’m pretty sure she stole it from Oprah. “Luck is being prepared at the right moment,” which means always be prepared because you never know when that time will be!

Q: “Has there been a particular moment where the extent of Glee‘s fame has really ‘hit you’?” – Lauren B. (Sunshine Coast, Australia)
A: There are really 2 moments:
1) During the first tour at Radio City Music Hall and having so many people barricaded outside the stage door. It was definitely a Beatles moment.
2) My brother Timmy who was going to uni in England when the show started airing in the US and had been watching it online and had no idea that the show was as successful as it was. So, when I went over to London last summer for the first time, he was laughing at why Fox had given us security and vans to travel in. Granted, he’s 6’3″ and I’m not even 5’8″, so he felt odd that his little brother would need that, and so did I. As soon as we left the hotel for the first, time I started getting recognized and stopped and then more and more people came up and eventually camped outside the hotel. He was so freaked out because he had never seen it, and for me that was one of the coolest things, to be able to go to a place I had always dreamed of going, and to have people who know who I was AND to see my brother’s reaction was priceless.

Q: “Although your character is in a wheelchair, we know in real life are amazing dancer. Who is your dance inspiration and why?” – Missy S. (13, Las Vegas, Nevada)
A: MJ [Michael Jackson] is obvious, I know, but it’s so much more than just how great of a dancer he was. It was what he did to popular music and stage shows. He did things that no one had ever done on that scale, and was so dedicated. I remember years ago someone telling me how he would spend 8 hours in a dance working on a single spin. That’s perfection.

Win Free Tickets to see ‘An Evening with Jane Lynch’ in Los Angeles!

Posted by Rob on Sep-20-2011 under Contests, Events, GleeFan.com Exclusives, Jane Lynch

How would you like to see Jane Lynch, known by many Glee fans as the “outspoken” Coach Sue Sylvester, live in person? Next month, Jane will be discussing her new memoir, Happy Accidents, at Club Nokia at L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles.

Here’s some more information from the event page on LiveTalksLA.org:

An Evening with Jane Lynch

Club Nokia at L.A. Live
Downtown Los Angeles

Though she’s one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood today, Jane Lynch is anything but an overnight success. At age 50, she didn’t come into her own until the last decade. Before she landed her role in Glee, she’d battled alcoholism and anxiety, learned to embrace her sexuality, and accepted that life is sometimes a series of opportunities that come after what seem, at the time, like disappointments. Funny, poignant and brutally honest, her book Happy Accidents is one part comic-memoir of behind-the-scenes-Hollywood and one part inspirational-narrative about self-acceptance.

“If I could go back in time and talk to my twenty-year-old self, the first thing I would say is: ‘Lose the perm.’ Secondly I would say: ‘Relax. Really. Just relax. Don’t sweat it…Be easy on your sweet self. And don’t drink Miller Lite tall boys in the morning.” — Jane Lynch

The current staff members are all listed on our staff page at GleeFan.com/Staff, and you could be there too! We are one of the most established Glee fansites and we have been running since before Glee even premiered in May of ’09. We have had exclusive interviews with cast members and reported from a great number of Glee events.

However, with the massive amounts of Glee news, it’s very difficult for us to find time to post everything. I personally will be very busy balancing a maxed-out university course load, an internship, and working as well. So we need your help in order to make sure that GleeFan.com is constantly up to date with all the latest Glee news, interviews, and media.

We would like to build up a small team of News Posters to make sure that our Glee news is constantly up to date. We are hoping to add a couple writers by September so that we are fully ready for Glee’s Season 3 premiere. As a member of the GleeFan.com staff, you’ll also be a member of our Glee Network of fansites — the staff of which is a close group of Gleeks. :)

At this time, we will be accepting applicants until Friday, August 26th, but the earlier you submit you application, the easier it will be for us to review them. We hope that everyone who is interested will take the time to fill it out. Remember that you have just as much a chance as anyone else who applies, so please do so!

The prize package includes:
1) A cast photograph signed by Chris Colfer (Kurt), Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina), Kevin McHale (Artie) and Amber Riley (Mercedes)!

3) A rare writer’s draft of the pilot script from September 26, 2008, including unaired scenes and original character descriptions. This script was given to me directly from Fox, and they are extremely rare. You can see a couple pages of it here.

Kevin and IRight now I’m neck in neck with another bubble, so EVERY member is extremely important! When you’re done entering, please get a friend or family member to join as well, because a few extra people will make or break the competition at this point! I’ve seen the Glee fandom come together in the past, and I cannot express how thankful I would be if I actually won the competition. As anyone in college can tell you, student debt is the worst, so I would be incredibly grateful if you guys could help me out! You have no idea how much it would mean to me.

If you want to keep up with my progress in the competition, you can follow me on Twitter @GleekRob as I’ll be Tweeting how things are going. Remember that I’ll only be giving away the prize pack if I win, so if I win, you could win too!

GleeFan Exclusive: Ashley Fink Q&A on inspirations, being a nerd, music & more!

Posted by Rob on May-11-2011 under Ashley Fink, GleeFan.com Exclusives, Interviews

Ashley Fink, Photo Credit: Kristian Dowling/FOXAshley Fink, also known as New Directions addition Lauren Zizes, has answered your questions in this exclusive GleeFan.com Q&A! She talks about her inspirations, how she got to be on Glee, her favorite music, and her advice for girls who are struggling with their self-esteem. Enjoy!
———

Q: “I was wondering who are your inspirations? What made you want to become an actor?” – Erika (24, Los Angeles, CA)
A: I have so many inspirations! A huge escape from the angst of youth, for me, was television. I’ve always admired funny women… Roseanne, Kathy Griffin, Amy Sedaris, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders… I’ve consistently been inspired by the power of comedy! Seth Green, John Candy, Bill Murray, any and all of the cast of Friends. Also any movie Tim Burton, Stanley Kubrick or Christopher Guest ever made has inspired me.
I believe I knew I wanted to be an actor when I was 3 years old. I hung sheets up, pretended they were stage curtains, laced up my tap shoes and put on endless shows for my poor parents… I was no fool however, I charged them admission.

Q: “If you had to choose to be any Disney character, who would you be?” – Eleanor O. (19, Melbourne, Australia)
A: Mrs. Potts because I’d love to sing, “Beauty and the Beast.” Also I love me some Angela Lansbury… and Colfer could be my Chip! Or I’d be Mufasa… because… duh… He’s Mufasa.

Q: “Lady Gaga and Ke$ha are hanging from a cliff and you can only save one. Who do you save?” – Rachel S. (19, Philadelphia, PA)
A: Ha! I’d save Gaga because I wouldn’t want her fashions to get disheveled… And I’m assuming the amount of glitter Ke$ha has on will break the impact of her fall.

Q: “What was the audition process for Glee like for you?” – Dani H. (24)
A: Crazy! Robert Ulrich who cast Glee is just a doll. I was very lucky in the fact that he kept bringing me in the office to read for different characters on the show, and I remember the day I read for Lauren. It was a Saturday (which is unusual but they needed to cast the roll asap), I was running late because there was mad traffic… I hadn’t had my daily coffee… Made it there just in time and I went in that room and just… I don’t know how to describe it… Sometimes things just click.

Q: “How did you react when you found out you were going to have a song to yourself?” – Jamilia S-W. (18, Atlanta, GA)
A: I think with a squeal followed by a jump kick… Yeah… there was definitely a high kick in there somewhere. I was thrilled! Mr. Ryan Murphy (who I’m obsessed with) told me before I actually read it in the script. And, “I Know What Boys Like” is such a fun 80’s anthem. Totally a Zizes jam.

Q: “If you can pick any song for Lauren to sing to Puck, what would you choose?” – Nicole B.
A: Haha… Any song?! The world is my oyster in this scenario! I may have to pick a few! Okay–
“Head Over Feet” (the acoustic version) by Alanis Morissette
“The Only One” by Melissa Etheridge
“One and Only” by Adele
and last but not least, I’d love to duet “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard with the Puckerman. That would be boss!

Q: “If you were stuck on a deserted island, which 3 people would you want to be stuck with?” – Kimberly S. (13, Ottawa, Canada)
A: Colfer because god knows I can’t live without my boo, my mom because she has the power to make any terrible situation not seem so bad, and the Genie from Aladdin because he could provide things like food, water and cable TV.

Q: “Do you consider yourself a nerd? And, if so, what sorts of nerdy things do you love?” – Alison T. (21, Albuquerque, NM)
A: Ha! If the cats not out of the bag already I’ll confirm it, I. Am. A. Nerd. I eat, sleep and breath anything Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars or mustaches. I am looking at my shelf of action figures as I type… We have all of the Ninja Turtles in front of their New York postcard backdrop, some Smurfs, Jack Skellington, Seth Green (yes, he has an action figure from Austin Powers, check it out), the Wicked Witch of the West, some Fraggles that I got in a happy meal. Also you should know I bring a zombie finger puppet named, “Harold” everywhere. He even came to the Golden Globes.

Q: “What do you sing in the shower?” – Maddy H. (14, Sydney, NSW, Australia)
A: Oh man… “I Would Do Anything For Love” by Meatloaf, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astly, anything from the Wicked or Rent catalogue… This list goes on and on, just ask my neighbors.

Q: “Do you have a favorite charitable organization or one you feel most passionate about?” – LaDonna M. (27, Tacoma, WA)
A: Yes! I love the folks over at the Trevor Project, they are just incredible and are truly changing lives. www.thetrevorproject.org
Also the Alzheimer’s Association is near and dear to my heart, one of my best friend’s father recently passed away and he was unfortunately afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Seeing someone go through that is life changing. www.alz.org
The NOH8 campaign is also great and the funds they raise go to promoting and raising awareness for Marriage Equality and anti-discrimination around the world! www.noh8campaign.com

Q: “What activities did you participate in while in high school, and what is the one activity that you didn’t participate in that you now wish you had?” – Carrie S. (31, Van Alstyne, TX)
A: High School activities… Does trash talking and going to the record store count? Hahah… No, in all seriousness I went to a performing arts school and it took up literally all of my life. Rehearsals on nights and weekends, then musical theatre camp in summer. There was not much I didn’t participate in… I was a little Rachel Berry in that regard.

Q: “If you could pick any song for Lauren Zizes to sing on the show, what would it be?” – Kelly
A: “I’m Every Woman” – Chaka Khan
“Out Tonight” – Rent
“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” – Cyndi Lauper
Or an original song entitled, “Come Correct”–hahah, as in, “You best come correct.”

Q: “Where would you most like to travel?” – Jaime H. (26, Rochester, MN)
A: Anywhere and everywhere! I have never been to Europe, and I have always wanted to! Luckily I’m going to get to see some of Europe this summer on tour with Glee Live! Also I’d love to spend some time in Narnia or FernGully.

Q: “What is the song that you can’t help but dance/sing to when it comes on the radio or shuffle?” – Rose B. (19, Cottonwood, AZ)
Oh, wow… Too many to list! “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix A Lot for sure or… “You’ve got the Right Stuff” by New Kids on the Block. I HAVE to do the choreography every time I hear that song. No lie.

Q: “What advice do you have for girls who are struggling with their self esteem?” – Dani H. (24)
A: Hold your head up, and smile. Everyone has insecurities. Everyone! That girl you stared at all through high school because you wanted to be and look just like her? She had problems with self esteem too! The key is not to let self doubt and insecurities stop you from going after what you want, and being yourself. Stereotypes are silly and are not as prevalent as they appear to be. No one is perfect even though most people would like to be! So screw it! Just find the strength to be yourself and rock it.

Q: “Alright, super important question. Would you rather be a ninja, a pirate or a cowboy?” – Sophia P. (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
A: Ninja. Straight up.

GleeFan Exclusive: Chris Colfer Q&A on Glee, his plans for the future and more!

Posted by Rob on Apr-01-2011 under Chris Colfer, GleeFan.com Exclusives, Interviews

Chris Colfer at the Fox TCA PartyFrom the thousands of question submissions, here’s our exclusive Q&A with Chris Colfer where he answers your questions on Glee, his upcoming project Struck By Lightning, his high school days, favorite music, life after Glee, being a gay actor, and so much more. Enjoy!
———

Q: “What’s the typical production schedule for a given day?” – Murray C.
A: It just depends on what we’re filming. We usually work in nursing shifts if we’re lucky, like 6-6 or 9-9. Sometimes it can get really hectic and we’ll have sixteen to nineteen hour days. They’re usually filled with filming, pre-recording, and dance rehearsal but never in the same order.

Q: “Tell us more about Struck By Lightning! IMDb has it listed as 2012, has production started? As both writer and star, are you excited to see it become reality?” – Caitlin R. (19, Richmond, Virginia)
A: It’s the most exciting and the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. It’s very strange to be so active behind the camera (taking meetings, making calls, etc.). I held a meeting in my trailer once during the Rocky Horror episode, so I was in complete Riff-Raff make-up. I don’t think anyone took me seriously. We have an amazing team working on the movie. David Permut is producing (Youth in Revolt, Charlie Bartlett) and Brian Dannelly is directing (Saved!). We’re casting my character’s parents right now (which feels like reverse adoption) and we start filming the day after my last stop on the Glee 2011 tour. I wrote it for the kids in high school who are overachieving in their own right and underappreciated for it, just like I was.

Q: “If diet Coke stopped production, what would be your next go-to drink?” – Beatrice C. (15, Singapore)
A: Why would you even propose such a horrible thing? I suppose I’d have to try water.

Q: “Ryan Murphy has spoken about how the original cast will eventually be replaced, what was your reaction to that news? And have you thought about what you would like to possibly move into, like Broadway, television, movies or release an album?” – Tiarni C. (23, NSW, Australia)
A: I thought graduating characters off would add a very real element to the show. I don’t think I’ll be leaving anytime soon since I’m supposed to be the youngest in the club and I’m the youngest in real life, but you never know! Maybe Kurt will take an internship at a fashion institute or fall down an elevator shaft. Anything is possible… As for the future I’m kind of all over the place right now but mostly headed into a film direction. I’ll definitely do something on Broadway eventually, if people aren’t sick of me by then.

Q: “OK. So let’s talk musicals – Broadway, Off-Broadway, International, any kind from anywhere. In which would you, Chris, most like to perform, and in which do you think Kurt would most like to perform?” – David F. (32, Cape Town, South Africa)
A: I would love to do Next to Normal and I think Kurt would campaign for an all male cast of Wicked… which I’m pretty sure I’d consider doing too, not gonna lie.

Q: “What do you think you would be doing now if you weren’t on Glee?” – Cassie (13, Connecticut)
A: Probably fighting against the restraints of my straitjacket and bouncing off the padded walls of my cell. Other than that I honestly have no idea. I was in college when I was cast in Glee, so maybe I would have transferred to UCLA or CAL State Fullerton by now…or maybe I’d still be terrorizing Clovis, CA with my big ideas and high voice. It’s fun to think about.

Q: “Do you plan to study in college after Glee is over, or do you feel that being on Glee given you enough skills for your future acting career that you don’t need a degree?” – Anastasia N. (20, St. Petersburg, Russia)
A: I’ve decided if I go back to school it won’t be for acting, it’ll be to become a Disney Imagineer. I’ve never had an acting lesson but I’ve learned so much just by watching other actors. There are certain movies that I’ll go see just to watch certain people in them. That’s the best education you can get in my opinion.

Q: “What was your first big purchase after the success of Glee?” – Jessica R. (25, Canada)
A: A tax attorney.

Shelly’s Exclusive Interview with Dalton Warbler Telly Leung

Posted by Rob on Jan-16-2011 under Glee Guest Stars, GleeFan.com Exclusives, Interviews

Telly LeungOur very own Shelly has been a big fan of Telly Leung since seeing him in RENT on Broadway almost three years ago, and had the privilege of seeing him perform in the show on tour several times, as well as at the Hollywood Bowl this past summer. Needless to say, she was thrilled when she found out that he was going to be on our favorite show. She loved him as Steve, the Squeegee Man, and Angel, and love him just as much as Wes on Glee. As a newcomer to the show, Telly was kind enough to answer a few of her questions for an exclusive GleeFan.com interview. Enjoy!

Glee fans may know you as Wes the Warbler, but for the Gleeks who are Broadway fans too, you’re also a star on the stage. As someone who works predominantly with live audiences, what was it like transitioning from the stage to the TV screen?

I love working both on stage and in front of a camera, but they are very different mediums. That was something I had to learn – the hard way. I went to Carnegie Mellon University, where I studied acting and music theater – and we were trained for stage work. It took me a while, and some embarrassing bad camera acting moments in on-camera class after I graduated, to really learn how to work on a set in front of a camera. But, the biggest lesson I took away from my time in college at CMU is this: Actors must never stop being students. We must keep going to class, keep studying our craft, and never be too proud to make mistakes. The best thing I could have done was get myself to an on-camera class after graduating CMU, and watch myself be “BAD” on camera. We don’t learn unless we fall on our face, and pick ourselves back up again. So many of my friends from CMU are amazing on stage and on camera, and I aspire to be just as versatile. Zachary Quinto is a perfect example. We were at CMU together, and he was one of the upper class men I really looked up to. Just saw him be absolutely brilliant in ANGELS IN AMERICA off-Broadway, and we all know how amazing he is on TV and on film (like HEROES and STAR TREK).

Could you share some funny stories, pranks, or interesting moments from your time on the Glee set?

The Warblers are the new kids on the block, so we’re not quite at the pranking stage. Something that always makes me laugh when we’re together: when Zach Woodlee (Glee‘s amazing Choreographer) calls us by our nicknames, which we’ve all earned during rehearsal. I love the way he runs rehearsals. He gets it all done (with major time constraints) but keeps the mood light and fun. Titus Makin (David) and I share a nickname, since we flanked Darren during the Teenage Dream number. We are “the T’s” – since both our names start with T. “Darren and his T’s.” Makes me smile.

GleeFan Exclusive: Darren Criss Q&A

Posted by Rob on Nov-13-2010 under Glee Guest Stars, GleeFan.com Exclusives, Interviews

Darren Criss - GleeDo you love Glee, time travel, friendly dinosaurs, Harry Potter, adventurous space monkeys, Chris Colfer, and/or wood nymphs? If so, you’re in luck because this interview includes all of those things! Shelly recently got the chance to interview Darren Criss, the latest addition to the Glee cast. His character Blaine befriends Kurt and tries to help him cope with the struggle of being the only openly gay student at WMHS. And guess what: Darren’s just as nice in real life! He was kind enough to take some time to chat with Shelly about his thoughts on Glee‘s characters, how he got the role of Blaine, and more. We have a video with the audio, as well as a full transcription below. Enjoy!

So you’re a solo musician, you’ve acted on film and on stage, and now you’re going to be on Glee.

Yeah! That’s weird, right? Crazy.

It seems like you’ve had a lot of pretty awesome opportunities – do you have a favorite mode of performing?

I do. No matter what, I will always prefer a live performance. Whether it be a play or a musical, or playing music live. As long as it’s live, it’s the best because there’s sort of an immediacy to connection between an audience and a performer, whereas where you do film or television, you’re at the whim of so many different forces. You know, there’s a lot of editing and camera work involved, and also you have to wait quite a long time before you see any kind of reaction or connection to what it is that you did on camera. So, yeah, I always prefer doing things live. Between acting and as a musician, I’d say I probably prefer playing my own shows as a musician because that’s when you’re truly the master and commander of your own ship and it’s always fun just playing music with a band, really just actively putting your energy into something that you’ve created is so much fun. You know, where you don’t have a script not to necessarily hold you down, because if the script is good it doesn’t really matter. But yeah, so playing music is definitely my preferred mode of transport, as it were.

So when you’re not busy performing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Oh, man, I don’t really have spare time. When I have spare time, I start freaking out because I get really antsy because I’m like, “Oh my God, there’s so many things I should be working on.” Man, oof, I gotta take care of the chores. You know, my laundry, I gotta go to the grocery store, I gotta clean the schmutz off my mirror that I’ve been trying to get rid of, clean my room – I don’t know, try and make my life somewhat less of a mess and a joke of chaos than it is, so that’s what I do in my spare time. But when I’m not working on Glee, certainly I’m spending all my time working on the next show that we’re doing with my company, Starkid Productions, and I’m finishing and developing the music for that.

I saw your audition videos on MySpace when Glee had its online casting call – is that how you got the part?

I don’t know. I mean, I made those just because a lot of friends were saying “oh, you should do it!” And I was like, “no, no, I don’t want to do that.” But I eventually got my head out of my butt and just did it because I figured it wouldn’t hurt. I’d gone out for Glee before. Interestingly enough, I had gone out for the role of Finn two and a half years ago. I wasn’t right for the part at all. I remember reading it and being like, this is not me. This is like, a football player, and I’m a small, hobbitish guy. But, you know, as an actor you go out for all kinds of things and whether or not it really lines up to who you are is completely separate. So Blaine was the first time I had gone out for it where I was like, this is actually somebody that I might be able to capture a little bit. It’s kind of closer to my disposition, I guess. I don’t know – I made those videos months before I went in for Blaine. I’m an actor out in Los Angeles, so, you know, you go out and audition quite often. I had gone out for Glee two or three times for other roles before, so this was just – well, not just another, because it’s always exciting when you go in for Glee because you’re always like, “oh my God, Glee.” And so when I went in for this one, I was nervous as anything else. My audition is not, in my mind, was not the audition that people see online. I mean, it’s not available on YouTube, but I sang two songs and I did the scene, and that was that. Ryan Murphy told me later that he saw my videos online from the MySpace thing. I’m assuming it’s because whenever the casting office sent him my tape of my actual audition, they probably just tacked those on there. I’m sure they found them and put them all together, so I don’t know if they’re connected or that’s the reason why I got the part. I don’t think it hurts, so I don’t really know if that was the deal closer. I have no idea. Or the deal sealer, I should say.

Which character from the show do you relate to the most?

That’s a good question. No one’s ever asked me that. Who do I relate to a lot? I mean, the cool thing about Glee is that every character is like a shard of everybody. If you say that you relate to one person, that kind of pigeon-holes you as a certain type because I feel like all the characters are big, not exaggerations, but really big, blown versions of a certain trait, whether it be kind of like the silly or the extravagant or the rambunctious. I think they’re all different colors of a whole pallet of a whole person, which is why I think Glee works so well. So I don’t really know, it’s tough. Some days I feel really silly, and kind of – I’m not saying he’s [Finn’s] a dumb character because he’s a funny character, but you know. He has a lot of things that I will relate to. I’ll say sometimes I’m a Finn, and sometimes I feel much more of a badass and I’ll feel like Mercedes. So I don’t know. Of course, I could never be as cool Mercedes; she’s quite, quite, quite cool and it’d take a lot of energy for me to be as cool as she is. But, I don’t – I’d say everybody. I have my days with different people. That’s a good question, I’ve never thought about that.

That’s a good answer, a little bit of everyone.

Yeah, a little bit of everybody. I mean, every person is so many different people that I’m never one to pigeon-hole anybody or anything. I think we’re an amalgamation of a thousand different things, so based on that idea, I’d relate to a little bit of everybody on different days of the week.

I don’t know if you can tell us, but if you can, what’s been your favorite scene or musical number to film so far?

I mean, I won’t tell you because I don’t want to give it away, what we’re doing. But they’re really fun, I can tell you that, and I really like the guys that I get to perform with a whole lot. And I’m not just saying that to be nice; I really enjoy spending time with them, they’re all really cool.

If you could write your own storyline for Blaine, no restrictions, what would you like to see your character do?

I would like to see him go back in time and hang out with dinosaurs, and then maybe befriend like a really cool triceratops. And of course, the dinosaurs in this universe would be friendly and they wouldn’t harm me, and they’d of course be able to speak English perfectly too. And also the character of Blaine would be incredibly proficient at wilderness skills and would be able to build a house similar to that of the Swiss Family Robinson. And magically there would be other humans there that I could befriend so I wouldn’t go crazy. And then I would just hang with them, and if and when I got bored with that by season four or five, I would take a time machine back to where we are now and then maybe go to space and, you know, have a monkey friend that I get to have intergalactic adventures with. Oh, and then I would discover the cure to cancer. And then I’d find a secret file somewhere in the Atlantic that would give me the power of flight.

That’d be a great plot twist.

Yeah, I think it would. People keep asking what’s going to happen with Blaine, and I wish I was serious when I said that answer. I mean, I’m serious about me wanting that to happen, but somehow I don’t think it’ll match up to the dimension that McKinley High exists in.

Yeah, somehow… So you’ve probably been doing a lot of press in light of your new role, but unlike most media outlets, GleeFan.com is a site purely run by Gleeks for Gleeks, so is there anything that you would like to say to your fans?

I hope that they enjoy Blaine and give him a shot, because I think a lot of people are really attached to the people who are on Glee right now, and some people get upset about, “why are they introducing new people? I just want to focus on the people I already know and love.” But I ask them to give Blaine a shot and a fair hand, and I hope that they enjoy what he stands for and what he does for the characters. I think he’s a really strong, cool guy and I think he’s going to be a great energy for the show and I hope people can enjoy that. It’s more of a request than it is a statement. So, yeah, that’s my humble request, I hope people can accept me into the Glee family.

I’m sure we’ll welcome you with open arms. So I’m going to go ahead and go to some fan questions from Twitter.

Sure.

This one is from Yanti. Would you rather be a student at McKinley High or at Pigfarts?

I would much rather be a student at Pigfarts, easily, for obvious reasons, if not indicated by my response earlier about the plotline that I would like to pursue. Sorry, I’m never sure if people from Glee – when I get questions about Glee, they don’t really know about Starkid, or my other projects. I’m not sure if you do, or if you even understand the Pigfarts question.

Oh, yeah, I’m definitely a huge Harry Potter fan.

Oh, okay, cool! That makes things easy. A lot of interviewers don’t know about my – and I’m very careful, I never want to assume that people know what I’m talking about when I talk about Starkid or any of my projects.

This next one is from Jamie. Have any of your Glee cast mates seen A Very Potter Musical and have you talked to them about it?

Yes, actually! Somebody else just asked me about this for the first time and it took me by surprise. The first thing that Chris Colfer said to me was, he was like, “Hey, nice to meet you, man! I’m a big fan of A Very Potter Musical,” and I was like, “No way! You’re just saying that.” Because what I thought was he was just being very sweet and cordial. He probably found out I got the part and he probably Googled me and the first thing that came up was A Very Potter Musical. I would never assume in a million years that anybody who I ever meet will have actually or was familiar with the shows. If you’re just looking up someone online for like two seconds, you’re not going to watch the whole thing – it’s tough. So I just assumed that he was being sweet but just mentioning that and acknowledging it and so I thought that that was a nice enough gesture. And then later, upon hanging out with him more, I realized – he was like, “no, I like know the show.” He would quote it and he really knew the show more than anybody that I had ever met on set anywhere, because anytime I work in anything, nobody really knows about this double life I lead. They just assume that I’m just this actor on the show and that’s all I do. So that was the first time where somebody I was working with was really familiar with my other life, so that was really, really cool and we got to bond a little bit over that. We got to geek out over a lot of musical theatre things. So yeah, Chris has seen the show and he as said very kind things about it and it definitely meant the world to me when he did.

A lot of fans were wondering what it’s like to work with Chris Colfer. Jane Lynch once described him as, I think, an 80 year old woman in a teenage boy’s body. Would you agree with that, or how would you describe him yourself?

I mean, I’ve spent most of my time with Chris, but I’ve only been there for a short amount of time. I really like Chris a whole lot, we get to geek out a lot of musical theatre things and I think we enjoy a lot of the same things in general. I think both of us strive to be generally fabulous on a day-to-day basis, so that’s something I like to relate to Chris about. But I read that Jane said that about him. I don’t know – maybe it’s because – well, I wouldn’t say that he’s an 80 year old woman. I’d say he’s more of like – he’s like a magical creature, like a really fun, magical.. I can’t figure out what entity I want to say. Yeah, he’s like… man, I’m trying to think of a good creature that’s like, awesome. He’s like a really playful wood nymph. A wood nymph that’s caught in Chris Colfer’s body. That’s what I would say, because he loves – he’s a really positive, playful guy. So wood nymph does it better for me than 80 year old woman. But then again, that might just be a difference in sentiment between me and Jane Lynch, because arguably, they are the same thing. Maybe wood nymphs are, in fact, 80 year old women, maybe that’s…

You never know.

Yeah, I think when you turn 80 as a woman, you turn into a wood nymph. I wouldn’t know, I’ll have to ask my 80 year old women friends.

Alright. So this next one is from Lucile. Do you consider yourself an actor who can sing, or a singer who can act?

I would immediately say that I’m an actor who tries to sing a lot. I’ve always been an actor, I’ve been a performer since I was a kid. I’ve always taken it very seriously. I went to school for it, I did it in high school, and I got a degree in acting. Whether or not I have any talent as an actor is superfluous. I mean, I take from – I start anything with an actor’s perspective. I love to sing, and I happen to be a musician too, so absolutely, I’m definitely an actor who tries to sing.

This next one’s from Lindsay. What’s the most interesting experience you’ve had with a fan, and what’s the most touching?

There’s a lot of messages that we get in regards to people who have bonded over our shows, over A Very Potter Musical or any of our Starkid shows. Because they exist online, they’ve sort of yielded this online community between people all over the country, or all over the world, I guess. It streamlines the same kind of people with the same humor and sensibility at the same place. So I’ve heard a lot of people who have really become good friends over these things. They may have never actually met in person, or they then go on to meet each other and have come together because of this silly thing that me and my friends did. That is really touching to me, because it’s just something you would never expect when you put something out there like that. There are very, very moving incidents where a person will be going through a kind of personal or family tragedy and they’ll tell us about it. And when I say us, I mean me and my friends in the company of Starkid. We’ll read letters that have to do with using our songs or a scene or a joke as sort of a way to get through whatever struggle they’re going through, and that’s really, really, really touching and incredibly unexpected, but all the more moving for us. It’s really beautiful to know that the shenanigans you pull with your friends can reach a lot wider than what you initially planned on, so those are definitely some good examples of me being touched by fans.

Awesome. Kate and Meg were wondering if you’re going to be in Starkid’s next production, Starship?

Yeah, well I’m heavily involved in it. It’s sort of my brainchild. Glee will be keeping me pretty busy, so I don’t think I’ll be in it as an actor, but I’m certainly involved in the creative development of it, because Starship is kind of my baby that I’ve been fostering for the past couple of years and I brought it to the table for Starkid to work on. Now I’ve kind of given it over to the boys to develop more and more, so I’m in the process of finishing and writing the music for that show and that’ll be my involvement in the show. As much as I would love to be in it, Glee certainly takes a huge precedent in my schedule. But yeah, if you want to picture me as – like, my self will be embodied in the music, so yes, I will be in the next show, I just won’t be there in person.

Okay, that’s good to know. So you said you’re pretty busy with Glee, have you found out how many episodes you’re going to be on for?

Nope, I wish I knew, though, because then I wouldn’t have to be so on edge all the time about if they’re going to take me back. I hope they have me back. I enjoy being there, and I enjoy the character. As an audience of Glee, I’d like to see him come back.

This isn’t really a question, but based on just what we’ve heard and seen in interviews, your portrayal as a confident, gay high school character really means a lot to so many fans of the show, and I’ve been getting a lot of feedback about this, so I just wanted to extend a huge thank you to you for playing this role and we’re really excited to see it.

Oh, man, don’t thank me. It’s got nothing to do with me. It’s the writers and creators of Glee. Even when I saw the breakdown for the character when I went to the audition, I was like, “oh, cool! That’s really awesome that this guy is going to be on the show.” I just lucked out, I really lucked out. I always say that great parts aren’t created by actors, they’re written. It’s the people who write the show. I’ve been given an extreme privilege to be the vessel for this guy, but don’t thank me. Especially before it’s been on TV, maybe I blow it and I make it really dumb and no one’s going to like Blaine. So I don’t want you to have to put your foot in your mouth.

Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that.

Let’s hope so! I hope that it’s good. He’s written really well, and he’s a really cool guy, and there’s a lot of things about him that I certainly look up to, so I hope that other people can feel the same way.

Okay, cool. That’s it as far as the interview goes. Thanks so much!

Of course, my pleasure.

We want to thank Darren for taking the time to talk with us, and we hope you enjoyed the interview. If you’re a Harry Potter and/or musical fan, check out A Very Potter Musical! It’s a hilarious parody staring Darren as Harry Potter, and we at GleeFan.com have been huge fans of the musical for over a year now. Definitely give it a watch! :)
