Adam Kolkin to Play Young Kurt

Posted by Rob on Sep-29-2010 under Glee Guest Stars, News, Pictures

Adam Kolkin - Young KurtSo far, the casting directors have done a great job of finding younger versions of the Glee characters. Their young Finn and even young Rachel from the pilot were spot on, and they’ve done it again! Thirteen year old Adam Kolkin will be playing a young Kurt Hummel for a flashback montage in this Tuesday’s episode. Here is an excerpt from an article in The Orange County Register talking about how Kolkin landed the role:

The role called for an 8-year-old but Adam Kolkin went anyway.

The Los Alamitos High School freshman says he can look young but, more than that, he perfectly looks the part.

Kolkin, 13, will appear on “Glee” on Tuesday as a young Kurt Hummel in a series of vignettes flashing back to Kurt as an 8-year-old at his mother’s funeral.

The resemblance Kolkin has with Chris Colfer (Kurt) is so uncanny even the casting directors were taken aback when Kolkin walked in the room for his screen test.

“They all kept saying, ‘Oh my God, oh my God,” Kolkin recalled.

Speculations on Kurt’s Future Boyfriend: The Sam vs. Blair Controversy

Posted by Rob on Sep-23-2010 under Cast & Crew, Chris Colfer, Glee Episode Spoilers, Glee Guest Stars, News, Videos

Kurt HummelOne of the extremely hot topics among Gleeks right now is the debate over who will be Kurt Hummel’s future boyfriend. I think we can all agree that after all he’s been through, he deserves to find love. The real question is who will it be with. In this post I’m going to both summarize and theorize on who I think it will be, and I hope that you will do the same in the comments section below, because that’s what it’s there for. We want to know what you guys think, too!

First of all, the idea of Kurt getting a boyfriend originated way back in January when the online casting call concept was still green-lit. Ryan Murphy was quoted by Ausiello as saying, “We’re going to make them a power couple. We’re not going to do the whole hiding in the shadows thing. We’re going to make them popular, and out and proud and glamorous. Like prom king and king. We’re doing the opposite of what’s been done.” Later that month, Ausiello cryptically revealed that the character would also be on the football team. The most convincing bit of evidence that Sam was, at least at one point, planned to be Kurt’s boyfriend is this: long before Chord Overstreet had been cast, Chris Colfer revealed to a fan that the name of Kurt’s boyfriend would be Sam. (Sorry you got in trouble, Chris!)

Chord OverstreetThe turning point where the cast became so tight-lipped about the subject (with a little coaching, I’m sure) was when the character Sam was officially announced through a press release from Fox stating that he would be played by Chord Overstreet. When briefly describing him, it said nothing of him potentially being a love interest for anyone, which we should have taken as the first sign. Almost instantly, the cast began to pull those famous “I don’t know!/They don’t tell us anything!/We don’t know until we get the scripts!” lines. You may have noticed that when Chris was asked about the boyfriend character having been casted yet at Glee‘s Academy Event, he stumbled thorough his response: “I don’t know if the person– I don’t know how to answer this question safely.” He then looked to the producers and instantly switched to a “No… I don’t know anything” response. It’s obvious that he was under the impression that Chord would be the boyfriend, but wasn’t exactly sure what he was allowed to say. (Poor Chris!) Could that much have really changed since July? This wouldn’t be the first time that Ryan Murphy has tried to keep us on our toes [read: lied to us] so that a future plotline wouldn’t be prematurely revealed.

The most recent bean-spilling was done by Jane Lynch, who obviously missed the ‘mum’s the word’ briefings. When E!’s Mark Malkin asked about the character, she replied “”They’ve cast him already… He becomes the new star quarterback and he’s going to be Kurt’s boyfriend.” Jane went on to describe him as “a good-looking kid… He’s tall, boyish, with straight blond hair and big fat, pouty lips.” Big fat, pouty lips? Yeah, she was definitely referring to Sam “Big Mouth” Evans, no doubt about it. In a TV Guide interview with Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer at the Emmys, Jane admits she later was told, “Don’t spill the beans on that!” to which she added, “Also, there may be no beans to spill.” However it could very well be possible that she just wasn’t up to date. The evidence is overwhelming that Sam was originally meant to be Kurt’s boyfriend, but now even I’m beginning to think it’s possible that they’ve changed the plan.

Now comes the real game changer: Blair. Who is that, you may be asking…? As revealed by TV Guide’s William Keck, the producers are now looking to cast a new character for the show’s 6th episode. Time wise, that means they would need to have started (if not completed) the casting hunt by now. The character, Blair, is described as “a gay high school junior” who is “masculine, sexy, charismatic and handsome…” He will become a recurring character who gets the opportunity to sing in multiple episodes, and here’s the kicker, is in a rival glee club. Very recently, an audition video surfaced online that is supposedly for the character Blair. [Edit: It has been announced that the name of the 6th episode is "Never Been Kissed," which is titled after a film sharing a very similar plot line to the 6th episode. This further confirms that this audition footage is legitimate.] The video features a relatively unknown actor by the name of Brian Hissong reading for the role of Blair. Remember that just because he’s reading it in the audition video does not mean that he has been cast. If they want to get the casting just right, the producers and casting agents would go through numerous audition videos before making a decision, and this may or may not have been the person they went/are going with.

NOTE: Do NOT watch this video if you do not want to be spoiled. It features very plot intensive lines that may or may not appear in the final script of the 6th episode.

The video was originally on YouTube before being “removed by the user,” however, it has been reuploaded on Chinese YouTube equivalent, YouKu. I went ahead and embedded it, but here’s no telling how long it will be before this one gets pulled as well.

From the video, we can deduce that Kurt goes undercover as “Billy” and infiltrates the opposing school’s glee club. Incognito, Kurt befriends Blair and his friends before eventually being discovered. But when Kurt believes that they are actually going to beat him up for spying, they reveal that they figured it out a while ago and found how bad a spy he was to be kind of “endearing.” It is then revealed that at Blair’s school, they do not bully people for being gay — a stark contrast to Kurt’s experiences in the halls of McKinley. When Blair explains that he is gay, Kurt talks about how hard it is being the only openly gay kid back at his own school. Then the whole thing gets a little too “after school special” for my taste with a serious little speech from Blair.

There’s a part of me that is praying that “Blair” is an extremely clever ploy to throw people off. People have been theorizing that Blair will be a couple episode character arc, while something with Sam could develop much later on. Back at Comic-Con 2010, Chris told Ausiello that he “heard they might be leaning towards another storyline more, which would delay that.” He then added that the new delay might be “provocative.” Could this speed bump along the way to love be a short-lived story arc with Blair? I’m hoping so. [Edit: It has been said that Quinn will somehow play a part in Kurt's future relationship, and the best theory is that Sam will be with her before an eventual relationship with Kurt.] For these reasons, Sam/Kurt fans shouldn’t lose hope just yet.

As of now, it appears that neither character fully describes the original plan for Kurt’s boyfriend. While Sam is on the football team, an early spoiler that may have since been trashed, he certainly doesn’t fit Ryan Murphy’s “out and proud” description. Murphy may have decided that Sam wasn’t the right character to be Kurt’s boyfriend, thus creating Blair. It wouldn’t be the first time that the producers have changed their minds about a character. (Did anyone else notice that the New Directions “family” took Matt Rutherford’s transfer surprisingly well?) At this point, it looks like Sam as originally described doesn’t exist. I think Chord Overstreet is doing a great job with Sam right now, so I’m still praying that he turns out to be the one. (It looks like I’m not alone on that. Yay, Kistin!)

In “Audition,” they addressed how as the new guy, Sam isn’t comfortable with being too different just yet, therefore deciding against joining New Directions (for now). Maybe this insecurity about being different goes a lot deeper than we see in the Season 2 premiere; or maybe not. It’s anyone’s guess at this point, so what’s yours?

Laurie Interviews the Glee Cast at the Season 2 Premiere Party!

Laurie, who you may know as @GleekLaurie, recently got the chance to go to Glee‘s Season 2 Premiere Party and interview some of the cast on the red carpet. It was her first huge event on her own, and despite some technical difficulties, I think she did a really great job representing GleeFan.com! Check out her exclusive video and read what she had to say about her adventure below:

The Glee Season 2 Premiere Party was my first event where I actually got to interview celebrities, so I was definitely a bit nervous. And when I arrived at the Paramount Lot, my fears were acknowledged, because I realized right then and there just how legit the event was. Hot shots like Fox 11 News, E!, and People were scattered around lugging thousand-dollar video cameras, and I was standing in the corner with my dinky tripod. It was quite a sight to see. So, I found my designated spot right in the corner at the end of the carpet, neighboring Australia’s TV Guide and KIIS FM. I originally thought it was the best place in the world because I had enough space to set up my tripod (which later had several technical difficulties), but little did I know that it was THE worst place I could have possibly gotten.

One, people were walking in front of my tripod during my interviews, as you can see in the video with Josh Sussman. Terribly awkward, but it made for one hilarious blooper. Two, it was right next to the parking lot, so every time a car drove by, there was a chance that I would get hit. Several instances the security guard had to literally push me out of the way of the car so everyone didn’t experience a hit-and-run. And three, my spot was at the end of the carpet, so by that time, the publicists had to drag their clients to the screening. However, the nice Australian lady from TV Guide (Glee is really popular in Australia) led some of the cast members to me so I could interview them. She was even friends with Ryan Murphy! But alas, I failed to bring an extra memory card. Right in the middle of my interview with Heather Morris, a random publicist shouts, “HON, IT SAYS YOU’RE OUT OF MEMORY SPACE.” Right. In. Front. Of. Everyone.

The night was no doubt full of embarrassing moments (Hello, random publicist!), but all in all, it was a really fun learning experience. Kevin McHale even said he likes the site, and that he checks up on us regularly. So, if you’re reading this right now: Hi, Kevin!

Shelly’s Summer Glee Events Recap!

Shelly, one of our LA reps, definitely had a busy summer. Make sure that you’re following her on Twitter (@GleekShelly) as she regularly live Tweets from Glee events. Here is her recap of all the Glee events she got to go to over the summer:

This past summer, I was fortunate enough to attend several Glee events in the LA area. Here are some brief recaps and photos/videos from my adventures. Enjoy!

Heather Morris at Art4LifeMay 31st – 4th annual Art4Life benefit show at Club Level 3, Hollywood. Art4Life was founded in 2007 by Gina Starbuck, who created the organization to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society in honor of her father. You can find out more about it here: www.Art4LifeLA.com. This was my second Art4Life event (Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, and Dianna Agron hosted last year’s show), and I’ve always been impressed with not only the amazing performances, but also the amount of talented actors and musicians who donate their time and effort to such a wonderful cause. This year’s hosts were comedian Ryan Hill, actress Francia Raisa (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) and our very own Heather Morris. The trio did a great job of running the show, which included performances by cast members of Wicked, So You Think You Can Dance, and America’s Best Dance Crew. Check out my pictures below:

Jane Lynch at OutfestJuly 10thA Conversation with Jane Lynch, hosted by Outfest (the LA Gay and Lesbian Film Festival). For almost two hours, Jane talked to a sold out auditorium about her personal life, her career leading up to Glee, and everything in between. She was, as always, hilarious, charismatic, and engaging. I’ll let the video highlights speak for themselves:

Sue Sylvester Wax Figure LaunchAugust 4thSue Sylvester wax figure launch at Madame Tassauds Hollywood. Jane Lynch, Ian Brennan, and Iqbal Theba were present at the unveiling of Glee’s first ever wax figure. The John Burroughs High School Powerhouse (the real-life inspiration for the show, and the group that was featured on the Glee episode of Oprah) opened the event with a few performances of songs from Glee. They were followed by Ian Brennan, who introduced Jane, and finally by Jane herself, who, like all of us in the press and audience, was seeing the figure for the first time. Here’s a video of Ian’s introduction, the unveiling, and Jane’s reaction:

After posing for photos and doing several interviews with the press, Jane was kind enough to come out and sign autographs and take pictures with the hundreds of fans who had come out to Hollywood to see her.

Dianna Agron and many others were present at this fundraiser for 826LA, an organization dedicated to putting on tutoring and writing programs for children in the LA area. For those of you who are unclear about what exactly the event was, you can read the description and rules here. In addition to being hilariously adorable, Dianna was also the overall top fundraiser. Jenna, Kevin & Heather at Macy'sAugust 21stGlee Clothing Line Launch at Macy’s, Beverly Center. Heather Morris, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Kevin McHale were there to sign autographs for every Gleek who showed up and spent at least $50 on Glee merchandise. The new clothes look awesome, and it was fun watching the cast interact with their fans. I can say with confidence that they’re some of the nicest, most genuine people in the business. Towards the end of the event, I got a chance to talk to Jenna, and when I told her that I was from GleeFan.com, she gave Rob a shout out and recognized me as “GleekShelly!” That definitely made my day and was a great end to an amazing summer of Glee. :)
